EPIC: The Story of David

April 15, 2018 | Dave Keener | 1 Samuel 8:5-22

Community Group Questions

This week we resume our new sermon series "EPIC." We continue to recognize that not only does every story have a hero, but that the hero in every story of scripture is Jesus! Today we look at echoes of Christ in the life of David throughout the Old Testament.

Read: 1 Samuel 8:5-22, 2 Samuel 7:1-16, 2 Samuel 5:1-3, Jeremiah 23:5, Luke 19:36-40

Discuss:

1.    We live in a country without a king, because of this, our view of kings and kingdoms are often disconnected. What do you think of when you think of a king?

2.    David as the king of Israel is an echo of Christ in the old Testament. What are some of the parallels we looked at this week, and what other connections may you see?

3.    Israel demanded that Samuel give them a king. What was the motivation behind their demand, and how can we relate to that today?

4.    God’s promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:11-16 was that, “He would establish the throne of his kingdom forever” through his descendants …

A.    How might David have heard that?
B.    How does it actually point to Jesus?

5.    How does our concept of an earthly king (1 Samuel 8) contrast with the true nature of Jesus as the eternal KING?

Pray/Meditate: Luke 19:39-40 “And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
“Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were
silent, the very stones would cry out.”
