This week we begin a new sermon series called “EPIC.” All too often I hear people say, “The Old Testament is kind of boring,” and “I prefer the New Testament because it’s all about Jesus.” …Oh man!!! Let me tell you, The Old Testament is NOT boring, and it IS ALL about JESUS!
Throughout this series we will discover the crimson thread that runs through all of scripture. From Genesis through Revelation the main character is always the same, and contrary to what we often hear, it is not us. Every story has a hero and when it comes to the Bible, that hero is always Jesus!
Read: Luke 24:13-27, Exodus 12:1-5, 12-13, Isaiah 40:3, John 1:19-31
Discuss:
- In Luke 24 we see an interaction between Jesus and two disciples on the road to Emmaus. What “stories” from the Old Testament do you think Jesus might have interpreted to them concerning Himself?
- We often have an understanding of facts when it comes to scripture, but it takes the Holy Spirit to connect the dots and allow the light bulbs to go off. When/if you read scripture throughout the week, what approach do you take? Do you read it simply to gain information or to gain understanding?
- This week we looked at the familiar story of Moses, the 10 plagues and the origin of Passover. Did anything stand out to you that you had never seen before?
- We mentioned this week that there is great value in recognizing the crimson thread woven throughout all of scripture. Echoes of Jesus in the Old Testament that tell an amazing story. We mentioned three things that happen when we are able to recognize this thread.
A - IT INCREASES OUR AWE OF GOD
B - IT WILL GIVE US A STRONGER PASSION FOR GOD’S WORD
C - IT BRINGS GOD TREMENDOUS GLORY!
Take some time in your groups to pray for one another, and for our church, that as we walk through this series together, God would work wonders and accomplish these three things among us!
