Community Group Questions
This week we take a look at a somewhat familiar passage in Matthew 5:13-16. Here Jesus tells his disciples, and now us, that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
All too often we miss the power of this analogy as we may not take the time to stop and think about what it really means to be salt, and to be a light in a world that seems so dark.
As we enter the Christmas season let us be on the lookout for the countless opportunities God will give us to live this out in our community, in our homes and even in our church. Opportunities for us to “let our light shine before others, so that they may see our good works and give glory to our Father who is in heaven.”
Read: Matthew 5:13-16, Genesis 18:23-26, Philippians 2:14-15
Discuss:
1. What are some reasons we may be hesitant to “let our light shine” in the world around us? Whether it be at work, with our neighbors, or even with our own family.
2. We often think of “good works” as something we need cause, or create on our own and end up missing the things God lays right out in front of us.
How can we be more attentive to the opportunities God has already prepared for us, and better resound to them in obedience?
3. In Matthew 5:13 Jesus makes a powerful statement. In what ways might we be prone to “lose our saltiness” (that which makes us distinct) and what are some real consequences?
4. If being “Salt and Light” is a natural outpouring of what God has already done in our heart, how might we honestly assess our walk with Him?
Memorize/Meditate: Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
