EPIC: The Story of Joseph

Community Group Questions

This week we continue in our sermon series “EPIC” as we consider what stories Jesus
might have shared with two disciples as they walked to Emmaus the day of the
resurrection (Luke 24). This week we also go all the way back to the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis and another echo of Christ in the Old Testament that is still ringing out to us today. We will explore some of the amazing parallels between the life of this Old Testament hero, and the true Hero of history! Genesis 45:4–5

"So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And
he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be
distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before
you to preserve life.”

READ: Genesis 44:1-34, 45:1-10

DISCUSION:

1. The story of Joseph is a familiar one. In fact often we think we know it much better
than we actually do!

Was there anything new that stood out to you as we looked at the parallels between the life of Joseph and the life of Jesus?

2. Put yourself in the position of Joseph's brothers (45:1-10). What would be going
through your head as you stood before Joseph as he revealed to you who he really
was?

3. How does this moment, and the mercy that Joseph showed them, shine a greater light
on the mercy and grace given to us through Jesus Christ?

4. (Genesis 45:4-8) What does Joseph's response to his brothers (This was God’s
doing.) tell us about his trust in God’s sovereignty?

How can his example encourage us to go deeper in our own faith, and trust God with every aspect of our lives?
