Today we continue in week 3 of our sermon series “Faith That Works” as we walk through the book of James. Throughout our series we have seen that there is a clear connection between the things we believe and the things we do.
Today we look at James 2:14-26 as he tells us “faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” What is the evidence that should be expected of a living faith? It’s less complicated than we think. It is for us to walk in obedience and “to do the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do”. (Ephesians 2:10)
Read: Romans 6:5-11, 17-18, Psalm 40:2, Ephesians 2:8-9, James 2:14-26, Matthew 5:44-45
Discuss:
1. Before jumping into a discussion on good works, let’s begin by reading Psalm 40:2. How does this image encourage us as we begin to think about our faith compelling us to action?
2. What should our motivation be as we look for opportunities to do good works?
3. Our response to Matthew 5:44-45 is a pretty good indicator of how well rooted our faith has become.
Do you have the kind of faith that would bring you to love your enemies and to pray for those who persecute you?
4. If the world around us is looking at the things we do for REAL evidence of what we believe, what will they find? (Be honest here, don’t just beat yourself up!)
