Read all or parts of Mark 14:17-31

Talk About Scripture

On their last night together, Jesus and the disciples shared a very special meal—the Passover meal. Passover remembers the time in Egypt when the angel of death “passed over” the Israelites who placed the blood of a lamb over their doors. The sacrifice of the lamb protected God’s people. The next day, God freed His people from captivity in a foreign land. Like the sacrificial lamb that saved the Israelites in Exodus, Jesus sacrificed His body and shed His blood on the cross to save all who believe in Him. When we trust in Jesus, we are freed from captivity of sin and death!

The Passover meal is full of symbols that point us to Jesus. The bread of the meal represented perfect holiness because it was without leaven or yeast, which represented sin. The meal also included cups of wine or juice that represented the promises that God would redeem, or save, His people. As Jesus ate with His disciples, He told them that the bread and the cup represented new symbols—His body and His blood. Even though He was perfectly holy and had no sin, Jesus gave up His body on the cross for our sin so that the judgment of God might passover all who believe in Him!

Jesus showed His disciples with the bread and the drink that He is the true Passover Lamb. God’s people had broken the old covenant, and God promised to make a new covenant to forgive sins. The new covenant says that everyone who turns away from sin and trusts in Jesus’ death and resurrection will be forgiven of his sins and will have eternal life.

Prayer Time Ideas

  • Thank God for the promises He has made to us. Try to focus on a different promise each day. Why can we trust in God’s promises? How was Jesus the fulfillment of God’s promises?

  • Ask God to reveal sin in your life that needs to be confessed. If a family member has not trusted in Jesus, talk about the gospel and explain how that sin can be removed through the forgiveness Jesus offers to us. If the family member has trusted in Christ, remind him or her that Jesus has provided complete forgiveness no matter what. How is Jesus’ sacrifice enough to cover our sins? How can you live in a way that shows thankfulness for His sacrifice?

Actively Apply the Scripture

For Fun

Create a poster to celebrate and remember Jesus as the sacrificial lamb who provides our salvation. Write John 1:29 on the poster and hang it inside, over or next to your front door. As you pass through the door each day, pause to remember Jesus’ sacrifice.

Supplies: poster board/paper, markers, Bible

To Serve

Send a financial gift to a missionary who is actively serving in another country. Pray for the missionary, the people he or she is sharing Jesus with, and remember the sacrifices he or she has made to serve God on the mission field.
