Unit 26 Lesson 1
Read all or part of Mark 11: 1-11
Talk About Scripture
Jesus came into Jerusalem with cheers and celebration! The people had heard of the great miracles of Jesus—many had even seen them—and they believed in His power. The people celebrated Jesus by waving palm branches and laying them out on the road as Jesus rode into the city on a donkey. As they did, the people shouted “Hosanna.” Do you know what that word means? It means “Save Us!” The people were shouting Hosanna because they believed Jesus was coming to be their king and to rule over them with goodness and mercy.
The people were probably expecting Jesus to be an actual king—like one who marries a queen and sits on a throne. They were welcoming Jesus to lead them as a people on earth—to stand with them against Rome and to make them prosperous in the world’s eyes. But Jesus is the King of kings. His kingdom is not of this world! He is the King who came to save all who believe in Him!
John 3:16 says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” This was the true reason why Jesus came: to bring salvation and eternal life for anyone who believes in Him. Jesus is the King who has come to save from sin, not a foreign nation!
During Jesus’ triumphal entry, the people welcomed Him as King. Jesus was the Messiah spoken about by the prophet Zechariah: “Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). One day, Jesus will return to earth on a white horse as King over everything (Revelation 19:11).
Prayer Time Ideas
Begin each day with a prayer of praise! Just like the people in the streets, say “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna!” What are some ways you can honor Jesus as King today?
Ask God for His peace to rule over any difficult situation your family is facing. How do you think Jesus was so calm even though He knew He was on His way to the cross? How can we have confidence and peace by knowing Jesus as King?
Actively Apply the Scripture
For Fun
Choose some rocks from your yard or a nearby stream. Use acrylic paints to decorate the rocks with words of praise or the word “Hosanna.” Place the rocks in your yard or around the neighborhood. Jesus told the Pharisees that if the people did not praise Him then the rocks would cry out and praise Him. Talk as a family about how these rocks can remind us to worship Jesus as King!
Supplies: rocks, acrylic paints, paintbrushes
To Serve
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem, some of the people threw their coats on the ground in front of Him, which was a way to celebrate Him as King. Donate unused coats or clothes to individuals or organizations that have need. Consider starting a collection with others in your church to provide winter coats for others. This can also be a way to worship Jesus as King!
Supplies: Coats/clothes, optional: collection bins
