Philippians: Joy No Matter What, week 9 (Philippians 4:4-9)

January 24th, 2021 | Kyle Brenon

Join us this week as we look at Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

God's Great Comfort—Isaiah 40:1-11

God's Great Comfort—Isaiah 40:1-11

January 17th, 2021 | Brian Detzel

This week, we hear from guest preacher, Brian Detzel, as he shares about God's Great Comfort, from Isaiah 40:1-11.

Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that her warfare is ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the Lord's hand
double for all her sins.

A voice cries:
“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

A voice says, “Cry!”
And I said, “What shall I cry?”
All flesh is grass,
and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the Lord blows on it;
surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.

Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Behold your God!”
Behold, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.

Philippians: Joy No Matter What, week 8 (Philippians 3:17-21)

January 10th, 2021 | Kyle Brenon

We're back in our Philippians series this Sunday, Joy No Matter What! Join us as we look at Philippians 3:17-21:

"Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself."

Philippians: Joy No Matter What, week 7 (Philippians 3:12-16)

We're back in our Philippians series this Sunday, Joy No Matter What! Join us as we look at Philippians 3:12-16:

"Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained."

Living in Harmony—Romans 15:1-7

December 27th, 2020 | Kyle Brenon

Join us tomorrow morning as we take a look at Romans 15:1-7.

Romans 15:1-7

"We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God."

The Light Has Come, week 1 (John 1:5)

The Light Has Come, week 1 (John 1:5)

December 13th, 2020 | Kyle Brenon

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” - John 1:5

All throughout scripture, God uses imagery like this. He points us to the great contrast between darkness and light, hope and despair. But what does this have to do with Christmas?

This year, perhaps more than any other, we have a perfect opportunity to see that Christmas is about more than presents and lights, more than parties and traditions, and even more than family and friends. It is about the arrival of a baby! But not just any baby, this baby is God’s answer to the world’s darkness— a gift of hope in the midst of despair.

Isaiah 9:2, 6
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.”
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

With all that is going on around us and as hard as this world can be, we can be certain of this, we have not been left in the dark!

Philippians: Joy No Matter What, week 6 (Philippians 3:1-11)

What do you place your confidence in? All day long, we place our confidence in different things. Your day might even begin having been confident that the alarm clock will wake you up in the morning! Sometimes we place our confidence in friends, family, or even co-workers to be there and to do things things we need or expect them to do.

When it comes to our walk with the Lord—our spiritual strength, our ability to serve Him, and even our standing in God’s eyes—where do we place our confidence?

This week, we continue in our sermon series, Joy No Matter What, as we look at Philippians 3:1-11.

Philippians 3:4-9

“… If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

Philippians: Joy No Matter What, week 5 (Philippians 2:12-18)

November 29th, 2020 | Kyle Brenon

This week, we return to our sermon series, Joy No Matter What, with a look at Philippians 2:12-18. Here, Paul tells the church in Philippi how to shine in a world of darkness and how to stand out in a "crooked and twisted generation” in order to bring God glory and to them joy!

The call for the Church to shine in the darkness is not new, though it can be difficult when it seems like things are getting darker. It is easy to become discouraged and lose hope. But as we trust the Lord and walk with Him in obedience, we can be assured, like Paul, that we do not labor in vain—and for this we can all rejoice!

Philippians 2:12-18
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”
